4. My impressions of the poem is that is about a fisherman fishing in the ocean who catches a large, old fish. The fish has escaped from many other fishers and seeing the old fishing lines in the fish’s lip, makes the fisherman rethink his decision of keeping the fish so he lets the fish go. The poem is a poem of victory for the fish, describing what the fish looks like and all of the hardships it has been through. It also reminds of a time I went fishing with my dad and my grandpa in the ocean. I think that if I was on the fisher’s position, I would have let the fish go as well. The poem also includes many details to describe the fish, but doesn’t really focus on the fisherman.
5. The speaker of the poem is a fisherman who goes out to the ocean in a rented boat to go fishing and catches a fish who has escaped from many other fishermen. The fisherman is impressed by the old fish and kindly lets the fish go, as he respects the fish.
6. The majority of the concrete details the fish and what it looks like. Toward the end, the speaker also describes the boat as well. There are no concrete details of the speaker, though. I would describe these images as very disgusting, especially those details that described the fish. The details remind me of the ocean and fishing. The sensory reactions I got from the poem were smell and sight. I got these reactions because I saw the old fish and I could actually smell the ocean and the fishy smell.
8. A pattern used in the poem was that every few lines Bishop would describe a part of the fish in great detail. The language used in the poem is concrete and literal since the details are not at all vague and she uses descriptive words to describe the scene, the setting and the fish.
9. I believe that the meaning of the poem is that people should have respect to people and animals The speaker explains this by saying how the fish had escaped multiple other fishermen. Because the fish had survived so many other times, the speaker respects the fish and so he/she lets it go.
10. My analysis of the poem supports my meaning of the poem because the imagery of the poem focuses greatly on the fishes description and how old it is and how it has survived numerous other fishers. The imagery shows a very clear picture of the fish and because of this image we, along with the speaker, respect the fish. The diction of the poem describes the fish in clear, concrete details that help paint a picture of the fish in our minds and show us everything the fish has been through. Plus, the way the speaker describes the fish makes us respect the fish. Because of all of these details, we come to respect and honor the fish for surviving as long as it did. When the speaker releases the fish, we come to realize that people should respect people and even animals, especially those that have been through a lot of tragedy, hardships and have had to survive through all of it.
